If I'd said I wished I'd never met you (I'd be lying)

I said "sing me a song that reminds you of me"
He sang of his ex girlfriend.

And once the story
Had cleared the air
And guitar riffs drifted away
I stood there with an
Expressionless face
And he asked if I was okay

He's hazy from downing
A whole bottle of wine
Intended for sharing
At last dinner time

But we didn't sit
At a table for two
Instead we were standing
On either side of the room

This it seems
Is a tango for one
Plus his Depression
And his wine-drunk love

And the distance between us
Never felt so far
As when he serenaded me
With his ex-lover's guitar

Upon Lacing My Shoes to Leave

Oh darling, it's a wasteland; haven't you ever known one?

I would argue that you have; however, the tricky thing about wastelands is that they tend to be quite sneaky.

They're the type to creep up and overtake a place while others sit idly, blissfully unaware of the war that takes place beneath their very feet.

Haven't you ever encountered a night—one where your steps felt the heaviness of your shoes, but when you removed them, your feet felt heavy too? That, my darling, is a wasteland.

Goodnight, Moon.

She was clothed in white: the type of girl who wrote poetry as she walked, gentle footsteps leaving a mark on the ground that must have felt so blessed to have been graced by her step. Her mind spun thoughts that burned like starlight that even her cityscape background could not extinguish. Truly, there was nothing dull about her. She could light up a room full of strangers just by walking through; this is not to say that her beauty was distracting, but instead, her presence (not just her appearance but her aura in its entirety) swallowed up every ounce of air left in a room. Bystanders couldn't help but feel it—like for a single moment, they had no breath left in them because every last gasp of air left in the immediate universe was consumed by her ethereal gait.

I once had a theory about her—that she is the moon, for no matter how hard I tried, or how stunning, bold, and beautiful she appeared, the lens of even the most expensive cameras could not capture her. She defied capturing, which seemed odd because she herself was so inexplicably captivating. Her spirit, however, was much too free, and her aura much too large to be confined to any page or screen. Maybe that is how she was always meant to be; maybe photographs weren't meant to capture those moments when she took my breath away, for maybe then they would be tainted, forced to be remembered in shades of ink that could never compete with the hue of a lasting memory.

Maybe it is unfair to trap those moments, like caged doves, onto pages in albums, or folders on screens. Those moments, when we sat across from one another in an intimate cafĂ©. She folded one leg over the other and scrutinized a book that she read for the third or fifth time. Her glasses slipped gently down the slope of her nose to rest at its delicate point, and her face folded into a grimace, as she undoubtedly empathized with a character, or mimicked some simple movement of an author’s creation. I sat, too distracted by the way the light played upon her freckled cheek, to tend to my own occupations.

Or when we would board a busy train together, necessarily separated by the bustle of the morning commute. I was not meant to capture her absent-minded gaze as her windswept curls jostled back and forth across her collarbone as the train swayed gently, her hands falling naturally into her lap, the sunrise outside the window seeming to single out only her to illuminate. It seemed to me that she had been hand-picked by the steadily rising orb in the early morning sky because she, of all the morning travelers, was the only one who could possibly contain its light.
And she did: she absorbed every touch of light and carried it with her, day and night. She threatened the moon and all the stars with her brightness.

These things were never meant to be captured.

She went through each day leaving the world a little brighter, a little fuller, a little more complete. And even though they never spoke a word in return, I thanked the stars each and every night for aligning in such a way that made it possible that I might know her. That I could be so lucky to have lived in the same world where each day she walked. That I could wake each day to a world filled with her lightness. That I could feel the light that poured from her skin, and see the nearly blinding brightness of her smile.

Still, years after the moon halted in the sky and every spark within her was extinguished, years after her footsteps ceased to grace the ground with their presence, and coffee shops no longer knew her face, I still thank the stars each night and day for once giving me a chance at knowing what it felt like to kiss the moon goodnight.

Tornado

I broke your lamp that sat bedside,
Which means you must turn on that light
The one that you have never liked
Because it seems a few shades too bright
But you didn't see
At half past three
The flicker of lightning
You left on me.

You couldn't know
That your touch made me glow
And that the smile that crossed my cheeks
Was waiting for months to be set free.

You've heard of dark places
But you didn't know
That your touch illuminated places
Where good guys don't go.

And when I told you
You are light
You're a tornado
Was your sweet reply.

I swept through your room
Tore down power line;
But It only seems fitting
For I fell from your sky.

Boomerang Dreams

We picked dandelions like bouquets, wrapped them into bundles and placed them shyly at your feet, waiting to see if the world had yet tricked you into thinking they were merely weeds. To you they were unsightly, but we were handing over a pocketful of wishes, waiting to be freed. We hoped you'd wait just long enough to see them return as your boomerang dreams.

Remnants

Your favorite songs
Are just dreams you've thought
And distant drums
From songs you've never sung.

The blinds cast shadows from the streetlight
And leave remnants on your bedroom floor
Like crumpled clothes and used hair ties
All worn out and happier
From the flicker of last night

And there's not much left of you
But crumbs of the broken
Things you once loved.
And there's not a whole lot left of us
But the makeup stains on your
Favorite shirt
The one you wore
Half of every night
We spent together in the spotlight
Casting jail cell lines
From your bedroom blinds
And never was I happier
When I laid beside
The man whose only love was blind.

12:09

He had to trust himself when he didn't even know himself.

You took steps guided by the fingertips of a blind stranger who disguised himself as the wind and whispered quivering truths in your ear. The stranger became a storm, running rampant through your thoughts; entering your ear and freeing himself through your lips.
He fluttered through your gut, entangling organs and pulling them toward your lower back, impressing upon you a sense of impending something. A sense of quivering truths. Your mind fanes clarity while whirlwinds of his whispers wrapped you in equivocated ideas, understanding the world through the fog that he placed between your eyes and your mind. You believed that you were slave only to your passions, but a wind became the deviant intruder, immune to your defenses and unseen by your own conscience. You believed it was just a part of yourself that had been hidden and awoken after so many dormant years, but this was an infection that spread to every limb and sank your organs deep into your bowel, neglecting the well-being. He saw a girl through the lens of your eyes, but he fogged the green and brown marble windows to your mind, and from then on you saw a girl through the lens of whispered rhyme. The wind echoed through barren caves within your veins; he said as he adjusted your focus to the date, curling himself off your tender lips: "it's just not the right time."
She looked at the clock reflecting in those eyes; blurry and backwards, it said 12:09.

Blurred Lines

He was the one
Who washed away tan lines.
He made them fade
When I was absent from my mind.

He took the lines and blurred them from view,
He peeled them from my brown body
And changed my inner hue.

He scraped the lines that dotted my thighs
And replaced them with bitter white lies.
He grazed the outline with his fingers
And in the morning his words didn't linger.

He took the shade of me
That he felt he owned
And he set it free,
With nowhere left to roam.

He broke the lines that traced
Gently protruding collarbones
And replaced it with a pale face
And a body too hazy to moan.

When the heat of morning
Brought no sun,
Looking to my skin
It seemed the damage was done.

And sleeping beside me,
Shades darker than before,
Was a man who felt he
Deserved so much more.

A Spectacle at Sunset

The blues infuse with the waves
That kiss the shoreline's rocky maze
And the pink that floats above the horizon
Casts visions of a milky haze.

The waves crash in hues of pink
As blue is defeating sun's last wink.
And as night begins to set
The gentle shore lets us forget
The nights spent solid, frozen shut
In winter's dismal, frigid rut.

Every night, between eight and seven,
We've glimpsed gentle views of heaven
Guarded by eroding rocks,
And impeded by two jutting docks,
We dip our feet into cold sand
And feel the heal of water's hand.

We all rejoice in splendid view
To see heaven's grace
In every hue.

Sydney

When my problems feel like oceans
The lake makes me feel small
And her melodic serenades
Send chills throughout the fall.

She kisses the shoreline
And dances in wind's waves.
Her howling echoes
Say it's cooler by the lake.

Despite her many warnings
Of lungs filled to their brim,
We choose to dance within her;
We choose to sink or swim.

Though I have not once
Been ripped from beside her shore,
I wonder if her horizon
Holds secrets of much more.

Safely perched upon the windowsill
Her songs perturb my sleep.
I wonder if her gentle waves
Will, through my window, creep.

For her to wake me in the night
From another's dream,
Would be the best and worst of times
For her love awakens me.

Frankly,

I've been the number one
I've been the only one
I've been the last one

I've been the extenuating circumstance
I've been dead to you
I've been gullible
But I won't be the "other one."

She's been the other one,
The number one,
The one you claim was "useful."

She's been walking with a blanket
Placed carefully over her eyes.
A blue blanket
That called her "butterfly."

She's been to the same places
And seen the same sights.
She spent months in your bedroom
Fighting cold Chicago nights.

She's been the dozen roses
That you carried by your side;
Does she know about the four dozen
That you chose to hide?

Darling, please know,
That I still think of you
But being the other girl
Is something I can't do.

Virgo

Snakes crept through red rivers
Entered through the bluest eyes
And swam forever downward
To meet between her thighs.
Now rivers stop their flowing
And rivers start to dry.

Now snakes keep creeping through her
Without a chance to fight.
And so the losing battle
Can never truly ignite;
And the rivers running through her
Ceased at the snake's first bite.

She smiled with vacant eyes
And swore she was alright.

Perfect Mistakes

I'd rather decipher your passion
Than read your perfection.
I want to experience your raw,
Deep emotion.

I want to feel what you feel,
And see your pen scribble out the
Words that didn't quite fit right.

I want the first draft;
The one with the stains
And the smudges
And the misspellings.

I want to hear the words as they're said;
To read the lines that you've bled,
To see the mistakes before they're marked in red.

So lend me your honest eye,
And rid yourself of erasers.
Your first copy contains no lie,
But perfection holds hidden dangers.

New Heights

She deserved brokenness
Like a caged bird
Deserves a key.

She took those shards of herself
And with them
She was set free.

She soared above
The life she once loved
Now able to see clearly.

She pecked at the shards
Of her own broken heart
And built a mosaic tree.

From that tree
She found a nest
To grow into a family.

Without broken shards
Of all that she loved
She never could have lived
So far above.

Her broken heart
Was the only key
That lifted her up
To all she could be.

The day she was shattered
She couldn't have known
That she would be better,
And from it she's grown.

Now her wings take her
To skies and new flights:
She's the flawed flyer
Who soars to new heights.

Reminiscing on Yesterday's Goodbye

I sat on the floor
With tears in my eyes,
Grasping your leg
As you shook me goodbye.

You dragged me out to sea,
And by the time I got back
There was nothing left of me
But gray skies carried in a lackluster sack.

Wrapped around your leg I sat,
Holding onto something real,
But regardless of reality,
Your foot was the only thing I could steal.

So you shook and you clamored
Until I lost my grip,
And out to sea you threw me,
Upon a sinking ship.

The Pain of Perfection

If I am the impromptu text at 2:46am,
He's the perfect reply at exactly 9:30.

If I cannot any longer bear to wait
To hear the words that seal our fate,
He cannot help but string me along
Like his words are a breathless, beautiful song.

The wait entices me to shut him out
To forget the night I'd been dreaming about.
It tells me that he's not really there,
Like it was a lie to speak of his care.

I fear that he places them on various pages
Analyzing how their angles cause changes
In the depth and the power
Of the words that once fell sour
Upon weepy eyes
Who garnered selfish surprise
Hung from doorknobs at midnight,
Reading again and again despite
The pain that ensued each stoke of my angry pen.
Spilling onto paper thoughts I'd never send.

Fate works in peculiar patterns,
Filling holes that never seemed to matter
And fighting demons that were hidden
Beneath sheets and sanity ridden
By men and by backs of knives
Whose sting reminds her she's
Already alive.

Unwanted

I am not the rain on a tin roof,
I am a blanket that never keeps your feet warm at night.
I am the uneven barstool at 2 am,
And the kiss that doesn't quite feel right.

I am not stuck between a rock and a hard place,
I am dancing with strangers in a sold out show
I am that corner where nobody goes.

I am not dancing on the rooftop,
I am a breakdown in a silent room,
Where everyone seems to be watching you.

I am not the beautiful freckled redhead,
I am the mess of tangled madness
And the chaos emanates from my eyes.

You can see my madness in your surmise
I can see your fear that strikes you in the drive
I can feel the want against my thighs
As the anger builds for each of his failed tries.

Forward Thinking

I see the bridges burning in the background;
A playlist to a life that did not live.

Wasting time waiting at the crossroads
For a train with no tracks.

Nothing left but ashes and attachments.
They mean nothing in the mirror
And less in the mind.
I realize you're left behind.

The bridges have been burned,
And tables have turned.
You lost your way
And I'm here to stay.

Interchangeable

Commodified curiosities
Living in The Now
Losing yourself to Everything
And laughing at the ground.

Maybe I have lost it
In the lives of boys
And the toils of men.
Maybe it all boils down to
When it starts and where it ends.

Maybe I have blurred the lines
And lost the ones
That bless broken shrines.
Maybe I have lost the ones
That break me down
In business that binds.

Maybe I have lost myself
To living in boxes
And trusting trolls.
Maybe I've found my place
In cardboard clouds
Under broken bridges of stone.

Only time will tell
Where we are:
How far from hell.
And only time will see us through
The cardboard boxes that befell.

Cancellation

I can't change my hair to match your mood
It can't be shades of red or blue.

I can't be older to follow you;
My age is something only I pursue.

We whispered vows in the night
That kept me alive
And when life got crazy-
As lives will do-
You went on your way:
Not to adjust, just to renew.
